Age Calculator
Calculate your exact age in years, months, and days, or find the duration between any two dates.
The Complexities of Calculating Age
Calculating someone's age seems like it should be one of the simplest math problems in the world. However, if you've ever tried to calculate exactly how many months and days old you are, you quickly realize that the human calendar is a messy, irregular system. Our age calculator does the heavy lifting to provide your precise chronological age, down to the exact day.
Why Calendar Math is Hard
If we lived in a simulation where every month had 30 days and every year had 360 days, finding the duration between two dates would be simple arithmetic. But the Gregorian calendar—the standard calendar used across most of the globe—is notoriously irregular.
- Months vary in length, containing 28, 29, 30, or 31 days.
- A standard year is 365 days long.
- A leap year occurs almost every four years and is 366 days long.
- Leap year rules have exceptions: century years (like 1900) are not leap years unless they are divisible by 400 (like 2000).
Because of these irregularities, "one month ago" means something different depending on the date. One month before March 15th is February 15th (an exact 28 or 29-day difference). But one month before May 31st? April only has 30 days, so does "one month ago" mean April 30th? Calendar math requires specific rules to handle these edge cases, which is why manual calculations are prone to error.
How We Calculate Exact Age
To calculate age accurately in Years, Months, and Days, algorithms don't just count the total number of days and divide by 365. That would ignore the nuance of specific months.
Instead, the calculation works backwards from the target date to the start date:
2. Months: Subtract the birth month from the target month. If negative, borrow a year, and add 12 to the months tally.
3. Years: Subtract the birth year from the target year.
This method ensures that if you were born on January 15th, and today is March 14th, you are 2 months minus 1 day old, exactly calculated based on whether it was a leap year or not.
Chronological vs. Biological Age
While this tool calculates your chronological age (the exact amount of time that has passed since you were born), the scientific community is increasingly interested in biological age.
Chronological age moves at exactly the same speed for everyone. Biological age, however, measures how quickly your body is aging at a cellular level. It is influenced by genetics, diet, stress, sleep, exercise, and environment. Two people might both have a chronological age of exactly 45 years, 3 months, and 12 days, but one might have the biological markers of a 35-year-old, while the other has the physiology of a 55-year-old.
Programming Date Calculations
For developers, handling dates is an infamous pain point. In JavaScript, for example, the native Date object uses a zero-indexed month system (January is 0, December is 11), but one-indexed days. Timestamps are calculated in milliseconds since the Unix Epoch (January 1, 1970). Because building custom date logic is so fraught with edge-case bugs related to timezones and leap years, developers almost always rely on specialized libraries like Date-fns, Moment.js, or the modern Intl APIs to handle date parsing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does this age calculator handle leap years?
Our calculator uses native browser date mathematics, which automatically account for leap years. It knows exactly which years are leap years (including the century rules) and whether February had 28 or 29 days in the specific years between your birth date and the target date.
Can I use this to find the time between any two dates?
Yes! While it's designed to calculate your age by comparing your birth date to today, you can change the "Calculate age at this date" field to any past or future date. This makes it perfect for finding the exact duration of a project, relationship, or historical era.
Why do some months have 30 days and others 31?
The Gregorian calendar has months of varying lengths for historical and political reasons dating back to the Roman Empire. The original Roman calendar was 10 months long. Later emperors, including Julius Caesar and Augustus, reformed the calendar, leading to the irregular 28/30/31 day structure we use today to keep the calendar roughly aligned with the solar year.
What is chronological age vs biological age?
Chronological age is the exact, unchangeable amount of time you have been alive since birth, which this tool calculates. Biological age refers to how old your cells and tissues appear based on physiology, which can be positively or negatively affected by your lifestyle, diet, genetics, and environment.
How many days are in a year?
A standard calendar year has 365 days. However, a leap year, which occurs almost every four years, has 366 days. In astronomy, a solar year (the exact time it takes the Earth to complete one full orbit around the sun) is approximately 365.24219 days.
